AC Milan missed the chance to close the gap on Serie A leaders Inter Milan to six points as they were held to a draw by relegation-threatened Livorno. Massimo Ambrosini opened the scoring in the final minute of the first half but Livorno levelled matters eight minutes after the break thanks to Cristiano Lucarelli. The result sees Milan move to eight points behind Inter, whose match at Parma was postponed due to snow, and although they remain second, they have now been caught by Roma who are level on points with the Rossoneri following victory over Siena.

Wayne Rooney headed Manchester United to Wembley with an injury-time winner to beat Manchester City in a pulsating 3-1 victory. After Carlos Tevez had threatened to take the semi-final into extra-time when he quite brilliantly turned home Craig Bellamy’s cross 14 minutes from time, up popped Rooney, who nodded home Ryan Giggs’ cross to secure a Carling Cup final meeting with Aston Villa on February 28. In fact, the Red Devils thought they were already there. Controlling possession against a City side which sat too deep, they had carved out a decisive lead thanks to two precise finishes from Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick either side of the interval. Only Tevez’s refusal to bow at the feet of his old club kept the Blues going, but it was not enough. And though Rooney inexplicably failed to grab a third before Tevez struck, he is too much a part of United’s fabric to merely accept defeat.

Nine-man Inter Milan moved nine points clear of city rivals AC Milan at the top of Serie A thanks to a 2-0 win at the San Siro. Diego Milito gave the Nerazzurri the lead in the 10th minute, but they were forced to play over two-thirds of the game with 10 men after Wesley Sneijder was sent off. Milan tried to react but Goran Pandev’s 65th-minute strike secured the points for Jose Mourinho’s side, who lost Lucio to a red card in stoppage time before Ronaldinho saw his penalty saved at the end of a dramatic derby.

Wayne Rooney scored a sensational four goals to send Manchester United top of the Premier League at a mutinous Old Trafford. Manchester United claimed a much-needed victory over Burnley to ease their worries on the field even if they are piling up outside Old Trafford. Chants of “We want the Glazers out” from the Stretford End emphasised the debt mountain being carried by the Red Devils. For a long time it looked as though it was hanging round the players’ necks too. But a five-minute purple patch just after the hour brought Dimitar Berbatov’s seventh goal of the season and Wayne Rooney’s 17th. And, with new-boy Mame Biram Diouf adding another near the end, United had regained a sense of superiority, even if the outcome could have been vastly different if either Steven Fletcher or David Nugent had taken golden opportunities when Brian Laws’ first game in charge was still deadlocked.

Mathieu Flamini spared AC Milan’s blushes by netting the winner nine minutes from time in a 2-1 Italian Cup last-16 victory over third tier Novara on Wednesday. Striker Filippo Inzaghi, now 36 and little-used by manager Leonardo this season, had earlier reminded Milan of his worth with a 12th minute opener and some other fine play. A second string Milan side then allowed Pablo Gonzalez to score just after the break but the hosts eventually prevailed when Flamini’s powerful strike set up a quarter-final later this month with Udinese or Lumezzane, who play on Thursday. Milan neighbours Novara still enjoyed their day at the San Siro with about 10,000 fans of the unheralded club attending the unusual mid-afternoon weekday kickoff.

AC Milan kept up the pressure on table-toppers and city rivals Inter Milan with a 3-0 win away to Juventus – a result which turns the heat firmly on home coach Ciro Ferrara. Alessandro Nesta put Milan ahead in the 29th minute with Ronaldinho adding a second in the 72nd minute as Juve struggled to produce a performance that would ease the calls for Ferrara’s head. Another goal from Ronaldinho two minutes from time came amid protests from the home fans, who shrouded the field with smoke by burning any item possible, and sealed the win for Milan, who move within eight points of Inter with a game in hand.
